Hi Dan
I can't find common ground with lots of people when their religious convictions prompt them to act poorly. I don't see why I should ignore people acting poorly just because they happen to be atheists. It's not a preference for schism, it's that schism will occasionally be necessary if I'm going to claim consistency in my approach to assessing the merit of decisions.

I won't waste my time and risk what credibility I have aligning with people who are racist, sexist, homophobic, or who otherwise mirror the behaviours they claim to rail against in the religious. The benefits of operating from a large number base are outweighed by the hypocrisy necessary to not offer censure for ethical lapses in atheists that I would be quick to criticise in theists. Consistency is important. While it is possible to be consistent and wrong, it is impossible to be inconsistent and right.

It is inevitable that we will all sit at the centre of our own Total Perspective Vortex, because no-one thinks exactly the same way about everything. We do have to make compromises to get along, but my tolerance for such compromises is low when it comes to abusive practices or arguments used to rationalise same.

Hey, is that a piece of fairy cake?

I am convinced that our questions, and the very idea of questioning, would be a far more useful payload for the audience than our respective answers.

Dan, I dunno.

Somebody, very much like yourself, in an earlier comment, said: "Atheism would be a bunch of people relentlessly going forth not believing in unevidenced deities. I gather that none of the talks would really be about this relentless pursuit. Instead we will be hearing from secularists, humanists, anti-theists, rationalists and various forms and versions of free thinker who perhaps also happen to be gnostic or agnostic atheists."

Personally, I am happy with the product of disbelief, in that people who want what I want (A level playing-field for belief and unbelief, including removal of those fiscal and administrative leg-ups the faithers currently enjoy, plus recognition of "No, Thanks" as a religious freedom) are moving for the same kind of results.

Common ground is where the rubber hits the road. Pastafarians and agnostics shoulder to shoulder with Authentic Fundamental Atheists™, working to solve the problem of chaplain infestation? Fine by me.

I dunno Matt. It bugs me that people would prefer to split than discuss , explore and find common ground. The internet seems to make fragmenting too easy, allowing people to sit at the center of their own infinite perspective vortex. Everyone needs some cave time but the town square really needs people to share it and be in it.
